It is used to check for cracks, seams, laps, cold shuts, lamination and porosity in a wide range of applications including castings, forgings, extrusions and rough machined surfaces. When exposed to ultraviolet light, the penetrant fluoresces a bright greenish-yellow color, making for easy detection of a flaw. A black light source with a peak wavelength of 365 nanometers is recommended, such as the Magnaflux ZB-100F fan-cooled black light.Water washable penetrants can be used in open dip tanks and meet OSHA requirements for Class III B liquids due to their high flash point.
