Overview
About N44AZ
N44AZ is a 2003 Homebuilt Lancair ES, serial number ES-089-FB. It is registered to an individual in Huachuca City, Arizona. The current certificate of registration was issued on October 4, 2022 and expires on October 31, 2029.
The FAA aircraft reference file describes the type as a single-engine piston, one Ama/Expr UNKNOWN ENG engine and 4 seats. Its airworthiness certificate is experimental category (amateur-built), dated January 22, 2003.
N44AZ has 1 accident/incident record on file (most serious damage: substantial); details are below. 2 earlier records involve a different aircraft that carried the same N-number.
Probable cause: A partial loss of engine power due to an over-temperature event, which thermally damaged the blade tips of the turbocharger wheel and resulted in a slowing or stoppage in the rotation of the turbocharger.
Reported aircraft: Jerrell RV-4 — a different aircraft that carried the N44AZ registration before this airframe.
Probable cause: failure of the pilot of the RV-4, N44AZ, to comply with an ATC clearance by landing on the wrong runway, and the failure of the pilot of the SU-29, N55SU, to maintain an adequate visual lookout. Factors in the accident were: the failure of the air traffic controller to restate the landing runway to the pilot of the RV-4 during a critical period of flight, his failure to advise the pilot of the RV-4 that operations were being conducted on the adjacent runway, a high traffic workload which resulted from an airport open house, and a lack of coordination to accommodate the high traffic workload.
Reported aircraft: Jerrell RV-4 — a different aircraft that carried the N44AZ registration before this airframe.
Probable cause: A COLLAPSED INDUCTION AIR DUCT. FACTORS INCLUDE INADEQUATE DESIGN BY THE MANUFACTURER/BUILDER, AND A MISJUDGED RATE OF DESCENT BY THE PILOT.
